पाश जैसे क्रांतिकारी जन-कवि की आतंकवादियों ने उनके अपने ही गांव में गोली मारकर हत्या कर दी थी | पंजाब के जालंधर जिले में सन 1950 में जन्में ‘पाश’ का जीवन कई मायनों में अनोखा रहा | पहला तो यही कि “साहित्य के जरिये भी आतताईयों के चेहरे पर वार किया जा सकता है और वह वार इतना तिलमिला देने वाला हो सकता है कि वे आपकी जान भी ले लें” | हालाकि अपनी लेखनी के लिए जीवन को कुर्बान करने वाले साहित्यकारों में ‘पाश’ अकेले नहीं हैं , वरन उनमे से एक हैं जो कुछ लोगों के इन शातिराना सवालों का , कि ‘लिखने मात्र से क्या होता है?’ , माकूल उत्तर छोड़ जाते हैं, कि व्यवस्थाओं की गोद में बैठकर तमगे लूटने वालों से इतर भी देखने पढ़ने की कोशिश होनी चाहिए , जहाँ कवि कहता है कि ‘ तुम मुझे एक चाकू दो / मैं अपनी रगें काटकर दिखा सकता हूँ / कि कविता कहाँ है ” |(सर्वेश्वर)| दूसरा यह कि “जीवन को मापने का तरीका हमेशा से गुड़वत्ता ही हुआ करता है , उसकी मात्रात्मकता नहीं” | ‘पाश’ के 37 वर्षीय जीवन की लम्बाई और सौ–सवा सौ कविताओं की संख्या उन तमाम लोगों के जीवन और पुस्तकों पर इक्कीस बैठती है , जिन्हें आठ-नौ दशकों का भरा-पूरा जीवन नसीब हुआ .

सहमी सी चुप्पी में जकड जाना
बुरा तो है,
पर सबसे खतरनाक नहीं होता,
सबसे खतरनाक होता है मुर्दा
शान्ति से भर जाना,
न होना तडप का सब कुछ सहन कर जाना,
घर से निकलना काम पर और काम से
लौट कर घर आना,
सबसे खतरनाक होता है, हमारे
सपनों का मर जाना ।
सबसे खतरनाक होती है, कलाई पर
चलती घडी, जो वर्षों से स्थिर है।
सबसे खतरनाक होती है वो आंखें
जो सब कुछ देख कर भी पथराई सी है,
वो आंखें जो संसार को प्यार से
निहारना भूल गयी है,
वो आंखें जो भौतिक संसार के
कोहरे के धुंध में खो गयी हो,
जो भूल गयी हो दिखने वाली
वस्तुओं के सामान्य
अर्थ और खो गयी हो व्यर्थ के खेल
के वापसी में ।
सबसे खतरनाक होता है वो चांद, जो
प्रत्येक हत्या के बाद उगता है
सूने हुए आंगन में,
जो चुभता भी नहीं आंखों में,
गर्म मिर्च के सामान
सबसे खतरनाक होता है वो गीत जो
मातमी विलाप के साथ कानों में
पडता है,
और दुहराता है बुरे आदमी की
दस्तक, डरे हुए लोगों के दरवाजे पर.

किसी भी धर्म का कोई ग्रंथ
मेरे जख्मी होठों की चुप से अधिक पवित्र नहीं है।
तू जिस झंडे को एड़ियां जोड़कर देता है सलामी
हम लुटे हुओं के दर्द का इतिहास
उसके तीन रंगों से ज्यादा गाढ़ा है
और हमारी रूह का हर एक जख़्म

मेरे दोस्त, मैं मसला पड़ा भी
तेरे कीलों वाले बूटों तले
माउंट एवरेस्ट से बहुत ऊंचा हूं
मेरे बारे में ग़लत बताया तेरे कायर अफसरों ने
कि मैं इस राज्य का सबसे खतरनाक महादुश्मन हूं
अभी तो मैंने दुश्मनी की शुरुआत भी नहीं की
अभी तो हार जाता हूं मैं
घर की मुश्किलों के आगे
अभी मैं कर्म के गड्ढे
कलम से आट लेता हूं
अभी मैं कर्मियों और किसानों के बीच
छटपटाती कड़ी हूं
अभी तो मेरा दाहिना हाथ तू भी
मुझसे बेगाना फिरता है।
अभी मैंने उस्तरे नाइयों के
खंज़रों में बदलने हैं
